Dimensions, weight and exterior design

MG makes no secret of offering an SUV with a very classic design, simply with a light signature at the front that is out of the ordinary. In terms of dimensions, we find a classic template for the segment: 4.67 meters long, 1.92 meters wide and 1.61 meters high.

In terms of weight, MG offers two configurations that will weigh either 1,810 or 1,920 kilograms. Kia, for its part, displays for the EV6 a weight of between 1,920 and 2,170 kilograms depending on the version.

In terms of design, the EV6 is much less conventional, and will not leave anyone indifferent. Beneath its concept car looks, we find a real production car with an unprecedented look. The dimensions are quite close, with a length of 4.68 meters, 1.88 meters wide and 1.55 meters high.

Inside

The interior of the Marvel R is very qualitative, with a leather interior and a panoramic roof which allows you to benefit from a very bright cabin. The front seats are very comfortable. In the back, two adults can fit in without any problem, thanks in particular to excellent roof clearance.

The black point is at the level of the rear trunk of only 357 liters, which is little for the segment. Good news however, a front trunk of 150 liters is revealed under the hood.

The Kia EV6 offers a more generous trunk volume, with 490 liters at the rear and up to 52 liters at the front.

With a wheelbase of 2.90 meters, both front and rear passengers will be comfortably seated, with the luxury of being able to extend the front seats to possibly enjoy a siesta during a load. Convenient.

Embedded technologies

Two screens are present on board the MG Marvel R: one behind the screen and the other in the center of the dashboard. In portrait format with a diagonal of 19.4 inches, the central screen is very imposing, but unfortunately with just passable quality.

A 360-degree view in augmented reality is offered: however, the quality of the cameras is not excellent, making these features more “gimmicky” than useful.

For the Kia EV6, there are also two screens but in a more classic layout with a size of 12 inches behind the steering wheel, and 12 inches in the middle of the dashboard in landscape format.

A head-up display is available on the most high-end versions, and Android Auto and Apple Carplay are included to allow you to use the navigation applications of your choice in particular.

On the road

For the MG Marvel R, the level of comfort is excellent as long as you are willing to drive gently. Indeed, the body roll can be felt on hard braking, which is also quite surprising because of the brake pedal which lacks bite.

Different levels of regenerative braking are available and adjustable via the central display, whereas on the EV6 this is done via paddles on the steering wheel, which proves more convenient.

The somewhat firm suspensions of the Kia EV6 may be a small black point for some, especially since the dynamic side of the vehicle seems a bit behind in favor of comfort. Forget mind-blowing performance for a vehicle that boasts 229 horsepower and weighs 2.2 tons, and focus instead on a smooth and delicate ride.

The different engines offered

MG offers three different trim levels, but only two engines in its catalog:

  • MG Marvel R Comfort or Luxury, propulsion with two rear motors and 70 kWh battery: 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, maximum speed of 200 km/h;
  • MG Marvel R Performance, all-wheel drive with two rear motors and one front motor, 70 kWh battery: 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, top speed 200 km/h;

Kia offers three different versions of its EV6 in the French catalog:

  • EV6 two-wheel drive, 77 kWh battery propulsion: rear motor only, 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds, top speed 188 km/h;
  • EV6 4×4, all-wheel drive with 77 kWh battery: front and rear motor, 0-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, top speed 188 km/h;
  • EV6 GT, all-wheel drive with 77 kWh battery: front and rear motor, 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, top speed 260 km/h.

Autonomy, battery and charging

The autonomy displayed in the WLTP cycle for the MG Marvel R is 370 kilometers for the Performance version, and 402 kilometers for the Comfort and Luxury versions.

With a 70 kWh battery on all models, it will take you around 7 hours in the best case to fill the battery at home with an 11 kW Wallbox. In fast charge, the manufacturer announces 43 minutes to go from 5 to 80% battery.

The Kia EV6 fast charging champion will take advantage of the Ionity terminals to reach 80% battery in just 18 minutes. With 77 kWh usable in the battery, autonomy is announced at 528 kilometers in the WLTP cycle in the best case. If you select the GT version, it is estimated at 406 kilometers.

Price

The prices of the MG Marvel R in France are between 39,990 euros (excluding the ecological bonus of 6,000 euros at present) and 48,990 euros (eligible for the ecological bonus of 2,000 euros) without counting any options. The advantage of the MG catalog is that there aren’t really any options to add as the finishes are complete.

The Kia EV6 starts at 47,990 euros, from which the ecological bonus of 2,000 euros must be deducted (then 1,000 euros from July 1, 2022). The EV6 GT-Line + is offered from 66,990 euros, and is therefore excluded from the ecological bonus.

Which to choose between the MG Marvel R and the Kia EV6?

At the end of this article, you will no doubt have your preference between the two electric SUVs, the MG Marvel R and the Kia EV6. If long journeys are frequent, the Kia EV6 will win hands down, thanks to its exceptional fast charging performance.

On the other hand, if the qualities of finish and the rather innovative interior of the MG Marvel R attract you, you will know that it suits you better. With an entry-level for the Marvel R available under 34,000 euros once the ecological bonus is deducted, it will be necessary to justify the approximately 12,000 euros more necessary for the acquisition of the Kia EV6. There is a real price gap between the two vehicles.

As often, this will be the deciding factor.
