MG Motor: an electric roadster in 2024 to celebrate the manufacturer’s centenary

MG has returned to France with an electrified range, far from the models that have made the reputation of the brand. An electric roadster should, however, see the light of day in 2024 for the manufacturer’s centenary.

The British brand MG, now owned by the Chinese group SAIC Motor, returned to continental Europe and France at the start of 2020. Its strategy focused on electrified models (rechargeable hybrids and electric) at a fairly aggressive price, with SUVs ZS EV, EHS and Marvel R, as well as the MG5 station wagon.

But this range has little to do with the small roadsters that made the reputation of the brand. A return to basics, however, seems planned for 2024, the year of the 100th anniversary of Morris Garages. According to CoachMG would consider marketing a production version of the Cyberster concept presented last year, on the occasion of its centenary.

The final model should take up the general lines of the concept, in a slightly calmer version. For the moment, no manufacturer is offering an electric roadster or convertible, and if Tesla is planning a second generation of its Roadster, it will actually be a fixed-roof coupe.

As a reminder, the Cyberster concept announced a range of 800 km and an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3 s. But such serial autonomy seems unlikely, due to cost and mass constraints. The future electric roadster could also carry a battery with “cell to pack” architecture, dispensing with intermediate modules, like the concept.
