MG Motor: everything that’s coming in the coming years

In 2021, MG is arriving in France with an electric compact SUV, the ZS EV. If the model is nothing extraordinary, it is convincing and displays a price of €29,990 before deduction of the ecological bonus of €7,000, at the time. It’s quite simple, no competitor is capable of following and MG is making a successful comeback.

The model will be updated in 2022 with the ZS EV II, more efficient in every way. This update was preceded by the Marvel R, which received 4 stars The Digitals during its test, and by the compact MG4, also in 2022, which gave European competitors a cold sweat. With a starting price of €28,990 before bonus and 170 hp powered by a 51 kWh battery, it was €10,000 cheaper than the Renault Mégane E-Tech with 130 hp and 40 kWh.

Since then, things have evolved; the prices of the Mégane have fallen significantly, while the MGs are no longer eligible for the ecological bonus. Worse, they will suffer a surcharge of 38.1% from the European Union. This does not prevent the manufacturer from following its roadmap, of which we have had some feedback via internal sources.

One of the first news is the arrival of a factory in Europe, which will allow MG to once again be eligible for the ecological bonus, but also to avoid customs fees.

On the hybrid side

The Sino-British manufacturer is currently launching its MG3 Hybrid+ city car which features some interesting technology to say the least. Indeed, unlike the Renault Clio E-Tech and Toyota Yaris Hybrid, the MG receives more than electrical assistance: a real strong 136 hp electromotor supported by a 102 hp thermal engine which serves either as a generator or directly as a motor. , connected to the wheels. The 195 hp model sells from just €20,000.

The MG ZS compact SUV is expected to receive this powertrain very soon, and should be presented within a few weeks or months. It will measure almost 4.40 m long and will have nothing to do with the current MG ZS, since it will be based on the new platform initiated by the MG3, from which it will take over the running gear. The vehicle will offer more space and technology than the outgoing ZS, but still at an attractive price.

Above should take place the EHS PHEV, at the end of the year. This brand new 4.70 meter model enters the D SUV segment, but will sell at C segment prices. The 100% electric range is doubled compared to the current model and would thus exceed 100 km WLTP.

On the electrical side

The MG4 will be very slightly updated, not aesthetically or technically, but simply to bring it up to the new European GSR2 standards.

By October or November, the 100% electric roadster, the Cyberster, will finally be available for sale and will be one of the very first production electric convertibles in the world. It takes the MSP platform of the MG4 and measures 4.5 meters long. In its most powerful configuration, it goes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds.

From 2025, the electric range will be renewed, either with updated models or with completely new vehicles. A total of four are planned, but we don’t know much more.

The SAIC group will also launch IM brand models, including the semi-solid-state battery L6 sedan, which promises up to 800 km of WLTP range.

Finally, MG would arrive in 2026 in segment A in 100% electric, with a price around €20,000, which could hurt the Dacia Spring and other Hyundai Insters.
