MG4 XPower: 435 horsepower and €35,000 to pulverize the competition

Barely out, the MG4 offers a new version called XPower. This resurrected name designates a strong MG4 of 435 horsepower, driven by two electric motors capable of propelling the machine from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8&nbspseconds. Performance enthusiasts will be in heaven because this MG4 is devilishly affordable, so much so that it is even eligible for the maximum ecological bonus of €5,000.

While the so-called “standard” MG4s only have a single 204 horsepower engine placed at the rear, the XPower version inherits the 204 horsepower engine, this time placed at the front, and a 245 horses in the back. The cumulative power of the powertrain is thus announced at 435 horsepower and 600 nm of torque, allowing in addition to benefit from an all-wheel drive and an electronic differential lock.

Like the Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S Plaid, this little MG4 has Launch Control, optimizing departures and ensuring a hot start. All this allows the Sino-British car to smash 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. For comparison, the Tesla Model 3 Performance displays 3.3 seconds, while thermal competitors like the Golf GTI Clubsport and its 300 horsepower take about 5 seconds for the same exercise.

During our test of the MG4 Luxury, we did not fail to emphasize the playful behavior of the compact. With this more powerful XPower version, MG may finally deliver a playful electric car that will appeal to car enthusiasts who regret the sanitized performance of electric cars. Ever since the advent of the GTI, sporty compacts have had a special place in the hearts of car enthusiasts.

To go along with the sporting claims of its machine, MG has added new dynamic cornering control as well as intelligent engine control to adjust the power sent to the wheels. The suspensions have been firmed up while the braking is improved thanks to ventilated discs of 345 mm at the front and 340 mm at the rear to stop the cavalry of the MG4. A telemetry data display also appears, a nod to the Tesla Model 3 Performance and its track mode.

Just over €35,000

Already available on the MG Motors website, the MG4 XPower is displayed at €40,490, which gives €35,490 once the ecological bonus has been deducted. Despite a sharp increase in power, we regret that this sport version does not use the battery of the newly announced long-range version. No 77 kWh battery here, but the classic 64 kWh unit allowing a range of 385 km WLTP, still carried by a 140 kW fast charge.

In addition to its performance, the MG4 XPower is adorned with imitation leather/alcantara upholstery, a different rocker panel, orange brake calipers, an aluminum pedal set as well as new 18-inch rims and specific fittings.
