Michael Bay’s crazy “Transformers” plan: almost 20 (!) films – is that still realistic after “Rise of the Beasts”?

TRANSFORMERS

How many “Transformers” movies does the world need? If Michael Bay has his way, there should be at least 19, but Rise of the Beasts could scupper those plans.

  • If the “Fast & Furious” series can consist of over 10 films, then “Transformers” can make at least 19 – at least that’s what Michael Bay thinks.
  • However, years have passed since these bold plans and interest in the Autobots is waning.

In 2017, shortly before the release of Transformers 5: The Last Knight, MTV asked director Michael Bay about future plans for the series. Bay surprised with his answer: 14 films are already being planned, and the spin-off “Bumblebee” was planned next at the time.

Now, 6 years later, there are a total of 7 “Transformers” films, “Bumblebee” was followed by “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” in June 2023. But the film was not a huge success and the future of the franchise is suddenly on shaky ground .

Even though the box office of “Rise of the Beasts” fell short of Paramount’s expectations, the studio will not simply scrap the series. A franchise is a film studio’s greatest asset these days. If a film fails, you try again a few years later with a reboot.

So maybe the story from “Rise of the Beasts” will never continue, but the story of the Transformers will. “Transformers One” has already been confirmed, as an animated film it will not be related to the previous films. And then?

Perhaps some plans once hatched by Michael Bay and a large writers’ room have already been scrapped. In any case, 11 films are missing after “Transformers One” in order to put Bay’s plan into action and release a total of 19 films.

“Rise of the Beasts” hinted at a crossover between the Transformers and GI Joe – a concept that toy maker Mattel certainly wants to stick with, even though the last “GI Joe” films didn’t do particularly well either.

In the long term, it’s not at all unlikely that there will be 19 Transformers films, but until then the series will likely move further and further away from Michael Bay’s first five films and breathe a little fresh air into the Autobots.
