Now the sports jersey of the now 59-year-old Jordan has set an auction record. As the American auction house Sotheby’s announced, it was auctioned in New York for a record sum of 10.1 million dollars.

There were around twenty bids for the garment. It is not known who finally made the highest bid of $ 10.1 million. Sotheby’s had previously only estimated the jersey’s value at around $5 million. Last year, the American’s sports shoes were auctioned for $ 1.5 million.

The number 23 shirt fetched the highest price ever paid for an item of clothing worn in a game. The Jordan shirt surpassed the amount paid last May for a shirt worn by Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona in the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals against England. In this game, Maradona had scored an irregular goal with the so-called “Hand of God”. His jersey changed hands a few months ago for 8.4 million euros.
