Red has established itself as the new trend color for numerous stars. In an interview, designer Michael Michalsky reveals what’s behind it.
2023 could be the year of colour, at least when it comes to fashion. Even though Pantone Viva has chosen magenta as the trend color of the year, many stars and starlets are currently opting for a different tone: a bright red! In an interview with the news agency spot on news, fashion designer Michael Michalsky (55) reveals what it is all about and whether we can expect even more red in the future.
Stars like Margot Robbie, but also royals like Princess Kate, are now increasingly wearing red outfits. What makes the color so popular right now?
Michael Michalsky: The color red symbolizes power, activity, dynamism and strength. After the Covid period and under the impression of the current crises, people no longer want to feel helpless and at the mercy of others. Red clothing demonstrates self-confidence. According to the motto: “Okay, times are difficult. But I won’t let that get me down!”
Red used to be the color of seduction. Does the image last to this day?
Michalsky: Red light district? (laughs) There are studies that claim to confirm that men are supposedly more attracted to women who wear red. I don’t know if that’s true. Red is a signal color and men looking for sex tick simple. But yes, a person wearing red stands out more than in black or grey. Red would therefore be preferable for dates.
Can everyone wear red?
Michalsky: Absolutely everyone can wear red! Because red is a signal color, it also harmonizes well with different skin types and hair colors. You can’t go wrong with that.
So you’re also a fan of the color red?
Michalsky: I like to use red in my collections. Gladly as a contrast in details or with accessories. But also sometimes in the overall look. Imagine a long, flowing, bright red evening dress… fantastic!
Can we expect even more red this year?
Michalsky: I can well imagine that. We’ve seen a lot of red in the fashion shows and also on the red carpets of this world. It’s coming to the streets now. I also refer to the current uncertainties. People want to do something about it. Red helps.
Which colors do we best combine red with?
Michalsky: Combine it at all, because red also works well as a complete look, then with white or black. In the combination with black, the look is a bit more mystical, mysterious. Combined with white, the result is a very nice freshness. Red with white is more powerful.
Will men soon be using the color red more?
Michalsky: You see it occasionally, but I would like more red for men. You just have to dare!
