As a comedian, Michal Mittermeier has a lot to laugh about. But in the NDR talk show he shows his serious side and talks about a personal stroke of fate that gets under your skin.

Michael Mittermeier, 57, has had a permanent place in the comedy industry for years. With live programs such as “Zapped” (1996), “Paranoid” (2004) and “Lucky Punch” (2018), but also most recently his appearance on the Amazon Prime show “LOL – Last One Laughing”, he makes his fellow human beings laugh . He is currently promoting his program “#13”. In it, the 57-year-old deals with a terrible fate, which he also reveals to viewers on the “NDR Talk Show” on Friday, July 7th, from 10 p.m. on NDR. “My wife and I had four stillbirths,” Mittermeier tells his sad story in conversation with Barbara Schöneberger, 49, and Hubertus Meyer-Burckhardt, 66.

The comedian has been married to singer Gudrun Allwang (“Somersault”), 53, since 1998, and the couple have their daughter Lilly. The way to the desired child was not easy. The 15-year-old would actually have had four siblings, as the 57-year-old revealed on the NDR program.

“Since 2005, I’ve had the dead children with me every day, including on stage [gedanklich, Anm. d. Red.].” The native of Upper Bavaria explains: “It helped me to banish the darkness with humor. That’s my valve.”

The comedian processes his grief on stage

And talking about it seems to be a way for Michael Mittermeier to deal with fate. Therefore, the comedian built the sad experiences into his stage program with dignity. Without spoiling the mood, but also without playing down the pain. Not all viewers understand his motivations. “Sometimes people ask me now if you have to take dead children on stage. Many of those affected don’t talk about it, because it’s a difficult topic,” he says and explains why he decided to go this route: It’s him important to get this topic out of the taboo zone.

Michael Mittermeier gets support from his family. “My wife and daughter were also in the new program. My wife hugged me afterwards and told me it was the best program I’ve ever done,” says the author.
