THE graphics cards of next generation are hardly mentioned that their (possible) video memory already teases us.
The last conference call organized by Micron to discuss its financial results was, as often, an opportunity to learn more about the American brand’s projects.
GDDR7 at 36 Gbps to start
Thus, Micron should quickly offer a new type of chip for video memory, the GDDR7. This has been announced for several months now, but things are finally becoming clearer.
Until now, graphics cards are equipped with GDDR6 at AMD or on the less expensive models from NVIDIA and GDDR6X on the most high-end products of the GeForce promoter. Two types of memory that are capable of reaching 20 Gbps and even 22.4 Gbps on the fastest GDDR6X chips used on the GeForce RTX 4080.
But while the theoretical maximum of GDDR6 is 24 Gbps, GDDR7 promises to go much further: Micron speaks of 36 Gbps, which amounts to an increase of 50% and tracks towards 50 Gbps are mentioned.
Samsung also on the warpath
According to Sanjay Mehrotra, president of Micron, the release of GDDR7 is more than on track: We plan to launch our next-generation G7 product on our industry-leading 1ß node in the first half of calendar year 2024 “.
Of course, the fact that GDDR7 video memory chips will be available by next June does not mean that manufacturers, of graphics cards for example, are immediately jumping on them. A few days ago, a leak indicated for example that NVIDIA did not plan to launch a new graphics architecture before 2025. Also note that GDDR7 involves the implementation of new memory controllers complicating things.
Finally, Micron is obviously not the only one on the GDDR7 and the competitor Samsung is for example also on the spot, even if no precise timetable has been put forward by the South Korean company.
