Microsoft 365 outage affects Teams and Outlook: What we know so far

Microsoft has confirmed that it is facing network configuration issues that make several Microsoft 365 services – including Outlook, Sharepoint and Teams – inaccessible to users in Europe, France, and elsewhere in the world.

On Downdetector, users from various geographies have reported that Outlook is down. However, at 09:33 GMT, some users in Asia reported that services were resuming.

In an initial update at 09:00 GMT, Microsoft confirmed on its utility health dashboard that it found the cause in a “network configuration issue”. “Any user served by the affected infrastructure may be unable to access multiple Microsoft 365 services,” Microsoft said.

“We have isolated the issue to a network configuration issue”

The affected services are Microsoft Teams, Exchange Online, Outlook, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business, Microsoft Graph, PowerBi, M365 Admin Portal, Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps and Microsoft Defender for Identity.

“We have isolated the issue to a network configuration issue, and are analyzing the best mitigation strategy to resolve it without causing additional impact. We will provide more information as we have additional information,” Microsoft said. .

The company warned earlier in the morning that as of 07:05 UTC (07:05 GMT), customers may experience network latency and/or timeouts when attempting to connect to Azure resources in Public Azure regions. , as well as Microsoft 365 and Power BI.

Network update cancellation

“We have determined that the network connectivity issue occurs with devices across the Microsoft Wide Area Network (WAN). This impacts connectivity between customers on the internet and Azure, as well as connectivity between services in data centers, as well as ExpressRoute connections. The impact of the issue is occurring in waves, with peaks approximately every 30 minutes. We are actively investigating and will share updates as we learn more.”

In a later update at 09:43:28 GMT, Microsoft said the issue was caused by a WAN update: “We have identified a recent WAN update as the likely underlying cause. , and we have taken steps to roll back this update. Our latest telemetry shows signs of recovery in multiple regions and services, and we continue to actively monitor the situation.”

We rolled back a network update that we believe is causing the impact. We are monitoring the service while the cancellation takes effect.

The Microsoft cloud outage comes after the release of Microsoft’s Q2 2023 fiscal year results, where the company reported 2% revenue growth, or $52.7 billion, thanks to cloud services . Personal computing division revenue fell 19% to $14.2 billion due to weak PC sales and shipments. Windows revenue from OEM PCs fell 39%.
