Microsoft acknowledges June Outlook outages were due to cyberattacks


In early June, service outages affected Microsoft’s flagship office suite, including Outlook email and OneDrive file sharing apps, as well as the Azure cloud computing platform. Initially reluctant to name the cause, the Redmond firm finally announced on June 16 that it was cyberattacks.

“These attacks likely rely on access to multiple virtual private servers (VPS) in conjunction with leased cloud infrastructure, open proxies, and DDoS tools.Microsoft explained in a blog post. We have seen no evidence that customer data has been accessed or compromised.”.

A spokeswoman for the company confirmed that the group calling itself Anonymous Sudan was behind the attacks, which at the time claimed responsibility for them on its Telegram channel. Killnet, a group of pro-Russian hackers, had announced the integration of Anonymous Sudan into its group of hacktivists targeting Western nations and countries opposed to Russia.
