(Reuters) – Microsoft and OpenAI plan to build a data center that could cost up to $100 billion (92.6 billion euros) and will include a supercomputer based on artificial intelligence (AI) called “Stargate”, reports the specialist site The Information on Friday.

The two groups did not immediately respond to requests from Reuters.

According to the specialized site, which cites sources close to the matter, the financing of this project, a hundred times more expensive than some of the largest current data centers, would probably be carried out by Microsoft.

The next major update to OpenAI’s AI model is expected in early 2025, specifies The Information, while Microsoft executives want to launch Stargate as early as 2028.

The planned supercomputer will be based in the United States and will be the largest in a series of other supercomputers that the two groups plan to build over the next six years, adds The Information.

The $100 billion figure cited by The Information comes from a source who spoke with Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, and another who had access to early cost estimates planned by Microsoft. These sources have not been identified.
