If you’re planning to get your hands on a Copilot+ computer this year, there’s a good chance you’ll be forced to wait before enjoying it. artificial intelligence (AI) features presented by Microsoft.
Announced during the Surface Event on May 20, Copilot+ PC will bring together Windows laptops designed for artificial intelligence. “ We’ve completely reimagined the entire PC – from silicon to operating system, from application layer to cloud – with AI at the center, marking the most significant change to the Windows platform in decades », Explains Microsoft about its new range of computers.
If the first models will be equipped with an ARM-based processor from Qualcomm, other manufacturers have also developed their own chips intended for the new brand of the Redmond firm, like AMD and Intel.
Free updates to deploy AI in Copilot+
The first devices equipped with chips from the two American giants should be available this fall. On the other hand, they will not immediately offer the features specific to Copilot+ PC, such as the controversial Recall or Super Resolution.
Free software updates will be required to enable them, and they may not be available until late 2024, Microsoft and Intel spokespersons confirmed to the outlet The Verge. In other words, the only laptops that will directly benefit from Copilot+ AI capabilities will be those powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chip. Purchasers of a device with an AMD or Intel processor will have to wait for an update to benefit from it.
A similar deployment for NVIDIA devices
Other AI functions will initially be available on affected products, and hundreds more are being developed by independent software companies, manufacturers reassure.
At the Computex event a few days ago, NVIDIA briefly announced that RTX AI PC laptops from Asus and MSI would eventually include Copilot+ PC features. It is a safe bet that their deployment will be carried out in a similar way, through free updates.
