A charging dock that appears to be Microsoft’s Surface Dock 3 has been listed for sale on eBay, even though it hasn’t been released and hasn’t been announced. What we notice the most is that it does not connect via the Surface Connect port developed by Microsoft. The firm could abandon its proprietary port in favor of USB-C.
In our various tests of Microsoft laptops, we regularly criticize one thing: their charging port, dubbed Surface Connect. Whether on the Surface Pro 9 or the Surface Laptop 5, it is present, without bringing anything more than USB-C. Worse still: it takes the place of a USB-C port that we would have liked to have. But all of that could soon be ancient history, if this leak is to be believed.
A Surface Dock 3: Microsoft’s dock would finally switch to USB-C
This is the very serious journalist Zack Bowden from Windows Central who made this discovery on eBay: a Surface Dock 3 on sale for $39.99. He notes that its design is thinner and that the device is Thunderbolt 4 compatible, a first. This compatibility should result in faster transfer speeds. Connectivity side, we would be entitled to a USB-C port and a USB-A port at the front: at the back, it would be two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, an Ethernet port as well as a DC connector that would complement the Surface Dock 3.
Why ditching the Surface Connect port is good news
What the Surface Dock 3 would change is first of all that it could be used on non-Surface devices: in offices or to share it, it’s still much more practical. So any laptop with a USB-C port could use it.
Other good news: this may be a sign that Microsoft is gradually abandoning Surface Connect on its laptops. By removing this port on its Surface Dock, it would create an inconsistency in its range if it continued to use it on its machines. Especially since, as specified Windows Central“ other Surface accessories, such as the Surface Precision Mouse and Surface Keyboard, already work great with non-Surface PCs. Finally, Microsoft’s Audio Dock, released last October, uses USB-C.
