According to new information from Microsoft support, the company is about to equip its browser edge of one virtual private network (VPN). It should be available in a future version for all users.

Entitled “Microsoft Edge Secure Network Service”, the VPN will initially offer a free plan limited to 1 GB. The objective is to encrypt the user’s connection is to prevent the collection of personal browsing data.

A partnership with Cloudflare?

This isn’t the first time a mainstream browser has dabbled in VPN integration. We recently saw this with Brave, which puts user privacy at the heart of its policy. Microsoft Edge is following suit by partnering this time with Cloudflare. This very popular American company, which offers many internet security services, is a content distribution network. Above all, the company launched its first VPN, “WARP”, in 2019.

Microsoft Edge Secure Network will use Cloudflare’s infrastructure and integrate it directly into the browser. It is specified that the company collects a limited amount of diagnostic and support data as part of the service offered. However, Microsoft mentions that all of this data is deleted after 25 hours.

The secure network procedure is simple: just go to the browser options (hamburger menu) to activate it in two clicks. However, everyone must sign in to their Microsoft account to use the service. Finally, note that this new feature will automatically deactivate when the user closes the Edge window.

What objectives for Microsoft?

Among the main features of the Microsoft VPN, there is essentially an encryption of the internet connection. User data will be routed from Edge through an encrypted tunnel to create a secure connection. It also prevents the internet service provider from collecting data and browsing history. In addition, the VPN allows you to conceal your geographical location by making you surf using a virtual IP address.

Privacy and online tracking have become increasingly popular topics in recent years. Browsers, extensions or VPN services are gradually being adopted by Internet users. Microsoft intends to offer an internal and free solution for its flagship browser. This also gives it a strong argument against its great rival Google Chrome.

Each user will receive 1 GB of data for free. This package will be automatically renewed each month, the “Secure Network” tab allowing you to monitor your consumption in real time. For the moment, no information on the prices of a paid or subscription formula has been communicated.

It looks like Microsoft is in the final stages of their VPN project. The service is expected in one of the next versions of the browser.
