Version 121 of Microsoft Edge is available for download. Discover what’s new with the latest update, starting with support for AVIF and AV1 formats.

One thing leading to another, Microsoft’s web browser is being enhanced with new features. Among them, some have been requested by users for a long time. The year 2023 was also an opportunity for the Redmond firm to massively introduce artificial intelligence within Microsoft Edge.

If today’s new features are obviously not as important, they were nonetheless awaited by a handful of users.

Behind its competitors, Microsoft Edge finally supports the AVIF format

In order to close the week well before the start of the weekend, the company led by Satya Nadella took advantage of this Friday, January 26 to deploy the new version of its browser. Switching to version 121, Microsoft Edge now supports AVIF and AV1 files. Here is what we can read from the official note published by Microsoft and relayed by Neowin :

As a reminder, the AVIF format is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. This has already been adopted by certain streaming platforms, but also by the main browsers, namely Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

Microsoft Edge: what’s new in version 121?

A few other more or less important changes have made their way into the latest version of Microsoft Edge (version 121.0.2277.83 of the stable channel). We learn, for example, that the browser has moved updates to the “Browser Essentials” section, located in the sidebar, instead of “Settings”. The idea being above all to offer “ better visibility and experience “.

Microsoft Edge 121 also comes with new policies against typos. In other words, if a user enters a domain name incorrectly, and this risks directing them to a malicious page, they will now be warned of their error.

If this update is frankly not the most significant in the last 12 months, it nevertheless allows Microsoft Edge to limit its lag behind competing browsers regarding support for the AVIF format.

Finally, note that the American giant took advantage of this version 121 of Microsoft Edge to deploy six security patches.
