Gone are the days when Microsoft wandered alone in the galaxy of web browsers. Faced with the undeniable domination of Google Chrome in this area, Microsoft Edge struggling to expand its market share. However, he does not give up the idea of one day conquering the hearts of Internet users. And for that, it has just announced the arrival of new features within its browser.

A few days ago, Internet Explorer finally bowed out. Barely recovered from this mourning that the Redmond firm has just announced the imminent arrival of future tools within Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft Edge: the calm… before the storm?

At the beginning of June, Microsoft’s browser was upgraded to version 102. And although this unfortunately did not bring major changes, except for a few security-related fixes, we were entitled to hope that it was ultimately only to prepare for the arrival of important updates.

In recent weeks, Microsoft had for example revealed that its browser would welcome various new features, such as a smoother migration from Google Chrome or the possibility of sharing files and notes between different devices. But, while summer is already upon us, the Redmond firm has just taken the opportunity to reveal the arrival of tools that will soon be integrated into its browser.

Edge is enriched with new features… dispensable?

As we learn from the latest update published on the Microsoft 365 roadmap, the information of which was shared by the site Neowin, Microsoft Edge will soon welcome three new utilities: a calculator, a unit converter and an internet speed test. According to Microsoft’s statements, these tools are among the most used by Internet users when browsing the Web. The calculator, converter and speed test will be directly integrated into the sidebar of the browser so that you can access them in no time. Nothing very essential to the program therefore, but these new features will undoubtedly please some regulars of Microsoft Edge.

Already available to Edge customers from the Canary channel (version 105), these features should officially land next August for all users of the web browser. Finally, note that Neowin also reported the presence of a world clock, a dictionary and a translator.

Microsoft Edge

  • Stable, fast, easy to handle
  • Secure environment (automatic and instant updates of the Chromium database)
  • Promising upcoming features (Drop, Secure Network)

With this version of Edge built on Chromium, Microsoft has recovered from the Internet Explorer turmoil. Stable, secure and accessible to all, the browser combines intuitive handling and advanced features to offer a fluid and complete user experience. We also appreciate its very good integration with the Microsoft ecosystem (Windows, Office 365, OneDrive, Teams, etc.) thanks to the user account.

Despite its qualities, Edge, like Chrome which it hopes to one day dethrone, proves to be catastrophic in terms of privacy management. Because if we can welcome efforts to strengthen confidentiality (protection against tracking, enhanced security mode, SmartScreen), the browser is nonetheless a formidable tool for collecting personal information which, cross-checked with the data transmitted by other Microsoft services, make it possible to establish a detailed profile of Internet users, lucrative for the company as well as for advertisers.
