Microsoft has a plan to weaken Google with Bing: it’s called ChatGPT

To counter Google in web search, Microsoft has an idea: to couple its own solution, Bing, with ChatGPT. Objective: to provide even more effective responses to Internet users’ requests.

This may be the key to dethroning Google as a solution for finding information on the web. And obviously, Microsoft intends to seize this opportunity to improve the market share of its own tool: Bing. According to information in possession of The Information, Microsoft wants to integrate ChatGPT with Bing to make it even more efficient.

ChatGPT is the high-tech surprise of the end of 2022. It is a conversational agent designed by OpenAI based on advanced artificial intelligence algorithms. It allows you to generate text on demand, depending on the elements you ask it: a cooking recipe for Christmas, a fan fiction, a convincing scam, etc.

ChatGPT produces natural language, as if talking to a person (we wanted to use it for a Turing test, but things took an unexpected turn). Of course, social networks have widely documented the limits and failures of the tool. Nevertheless: in several situations, the tool produced successful texts and performed sometimes complex tasks.

Microsoft sees ChatGPT as a way to really challenge Google

If the building proposed by OpenAI is still fragile, the foundations seem solid enough today to consider ChatGPT in an operational service like Bing, Google’s rival search engine. made in Microsoft. The tool is based on a GPT-3 language model, as well as supervised learning and reinforcement learning techniques in AI.

Such a tool can already unearth answers on the net to the questions it is asked in the text input area. On a larger scale, it’s a direct threat to a company like Google, which was born and grew through its stranglehold on online search. To put it even more directly: these agents could replace Google.

For a solution like Bing, it is also a potential danger – but probably less: first, because Microsoft does not depend as much as Google on web search (the Redmond firm could very well leave this market ). Then, because the group rather intends to take advantage of the tool, by integrating it, rather than opposing it.

Google, for its part, sees it as an existential danger. On December 21, the New York Times showed in an article that the threat is taken very seriously internally. A kind of red alert has been triggered and significant resources are being redirected to beef up similar projects available to the group – with no doubt notable announcements at the next I/O conference in May.

Microsoft’s interest in ChatGPT is not at all neutral. He sees it as a way to compete with, or even weaken, Google in the search field. It is also a return on investment. In July 2019, Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI. If it beefs up Bing and takes market share from Google, it will have been an extremely profitable expense.

In a way, ChatGPT pushes the logic of Google to the extreme, which is also a “response engine” (it sometimes displays certain information directly on its pages, instead of sending the Internet user to sites), and not just a search engine. He pushes her, turning her somewhat against the Mountain View firm.

When Google launched its “response engine”, many criticisms were leveled at it since the indications that the company gives on its engine (such as the weather, the stock market or the result of a match) are so many lost audience for sites that also offer them. Indeed, Internet users no longer need to click on the sites. Here ChatGPT, does the same thing: it also gives answers. No more clicking on Google.
