OneDrive features ransomware detection, an expanded personal vault, and password-protected sharing links for subscribers Microsoft 365 Basic.
Microsoft announces the arrival of new security-focused features on OneDrive for Microsoft 365 Basic subscribers. These are added at no extra cost to this plan which allows you to obtain 100 GB of cloud and Outlook storage without advertising.
Ransomware protection and unlimited personal vault
The first new feature is protection against ransomware. Microsoft 365 monitors your OneDrive for signs of ransomware activity and indicators of malicious intent.
When an attack is identified, the user receives a notification and an email from Microsoft to be warned of the potential threat. The system then guides the victim step by step to assess the extent of the problem, delete suspicious files and restore their OneDrive.
The Redmond firm also provides a personal safe in which to store your critical files. This is protected by two-factor authentication to make your most sensitive documents even harder for hackers to reach. Previously limited to three files, this restriction has been lifted for unlimited storage within the limit of 100 GB available.
Offline access and password-protected sharing links
Microsoft also announces the introduction of password-protected sharing links, with the ability to configure an expiration time. This option, which has become essential for this type of service, finally arrives in OneDrive, good news both for collaborative work in a professional environment or for personal and family projects.
Finally, the Microsoft 365 Basic subscription allows you to access your files and folders offline on OneDrive Mobile. The user must individually choose which files and folders should be made available without an internet connection. It is not possible to activate an option to make all online storage accessible locally on your mobile device.
