The current frantic race for artificial intelligence was initially fueled by ChatGPT, which led Microsoft to quickly react to the public and media success of this conversational agent, investing $1 billion in OpenAI, the company creative. As part of an antitrust proceeding initiated by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) against Google, the reasons for this participation were clarified.
Shared by our colleagues at Business Insideran email from the technical director (CTO) of Microsoft, Kevin Scott, addressed on June 12, 2019 to the CEO of the company Satya Nadella, as well as to co-founder Bill Gates, reveals the concern of the Redmond firm in the face of competition, specifically that of Google.
“We are several years behind when it comes to the scale of machine learning”explained Kevin Scott at the time in his email Thoughts on OpenAIwhile indicating that the work to replicate and train Google’s BERT model took Microsoft engineers six months.
It was following this email, transferred directly by the CEO of Microsoft to its financial director, Amy Hood, that the $1 billion investment project in OpenAI came into being.
