Microsoft has started testing an interesting new feature on Edge: the addition of a VPN equivalent called “Microsoft Edge Secure Network”. Powered by Cloudflare, this feature should put Edge back in the race against some competing browsers.
After Opera, Mozilla or even Brave, Microsoft is in turn interested in the question of a VPN integrated directly into its Edge browser. We learn from XDA Developers that the firm has started testing a VPN equivalent called “ Microsoft Edge Secure Network “. Mentioned on a support page added to the official Microsoft site, this novelty is powered by the American Cloudflare.
As XDA clarifies, this feature is not rolling out to Edge at this point. It’s not even accessible on Edge’s developer channel yet, but it seems similar to Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 service. The latter takes over the main functions of a VPN, namely the encryption of your browsing data (in order to make them inaccessible to third parties, including the ISP), but also the possibility of accessing geo- restricted or content blocked in your region or country.

If it wants to add a VPN to Edge, Microsoft also doesn’t want a “open barwhich would cost him a fortune. We therefore learn that it will be necessary to be connected to a Microsoft account to take advantage of 1 GB ofdataoffered, renewed each month. Nothing surprising here: most VPNs are paid. We don’t know if a paid version will allow you to use more data, but it seems possible.
There remains the question of the deployment of this novelty. According to XDA this could materialize soon, first on Edge Canary or on the developer channel, before being made available in beta to a larger number of users. Once launched, this function will be accessible from the “three dots menu”, installed at the top right of the interface. It will allow Microsoft to put Edge at the level of competition from Opera or Brave, which have been offering an integrated VPN for several years now.
