More security and bug fixes for Windows 11

The security updates in May mainly made improvements to Windows 11. Among other things, a bug that affected Virtual Secure Mode (VSM) scenarios has been fixed. VPN, Windows Hello, Credential Guard and Key Guard may fail due to the issue. A difficulty with the SMB client (Server Message Block) has also been resolved. This could previously result in slow data transfer. In addition, various improvements were made to the internal operating system functions and minor bugs were fixed.

The new update also addressed quality improvements to the Windows 11 servicing stack. This component is responsible for installing Windows Updates. The improvement ensures that updates from Microsoft are received stably and reliably on your devices.

As always, Microsoft notes that Windows 11 devices will receive the new features at different times. Since these are being rolled out gradually, it may take some time before you see the change.

Quality improvements for Windows 10

For Windows 10, the changes are again less extensive. The update contains quality and security improvements for the operating system. There are no major errors that needed to be fixed.

Please note that Windows 10 Enterprise and Education, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise, and Windows 10 Enterprise Multi-Session will no longer receive monthly updates after June 11, 2024.

Serious gaps

Recently there were a few critical security vulnerabilities in both Windows 11 and Windows 10. These occurred in Windows Office Sharepoint, Microsoft Streaming Service and Bing. The update also fixes weak points in Windows Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS), Edge, Windows Hyper-V and the kernel.

It is extremely important that you update and close the gaps in this way. Otherwise, they can be exploited by cybercriminals to gain access to your computer and thus your files.

Windows Patch Day: Which versions of 8.1, 10 and 11 will receive updates?

Windows 10 Home and Pro receive 18 months of support for a new major version after it is released. Users of the Enterprise and Education versions, on the other hand, receive 30 months. This means that these systems still receive all important security updates. However, it is recommended to switch to Windows 10 in good time. An update to Windows 11 is also possible from here.

Windows 8.1 no longer receives extended support as of January 10, 2023. Patch Tuesday ended for Windows 7 in January 2020. Microsoft no longer provides updates to the operating system for private users. The same fate befell Windows 10 in system version 2004 with the December 2021 patch day. The system version Windows 11 21H2 reached the end of its term with the patch on October 10, 2023.

The easiest way to install a new system update is directly using the Windows Update function. Follow the path “Start” > “Settings” > “Update and Security” > “Windows Update” > “Check for updates”. Since Microsoft rolls out updates in waves, you may not receive a system update until a later date.
