Microsoft says a lot of PlayStation exclusives are higher quality than Xbox ones


Wanting to counter Microsoft and its plan to take overActivision-Blizzard, sony gave his all for his pitch, with heaps of headline-grabbing statements. Faced with the attack from the Japanese manufacturer, Microsoft’s response was not long in coming, since a few days later, a long document drafted by Microsoft was sent to the CMA (the UK market regulator). This document is released today, and in it, we see that Microsoft is singing the praises of PlayStation exclusives, to show that call of duty won’t be missing so much from Sony’s portfolio.

Exclusives at the heart of the debate

In this document, Microsoft explains to regulators that Sony’s leadership position cannot be threatened by the simple withdrawal of a license such as call of dutygiven that the Japanese manufacturer has been the market leader for more than two decades, and has strong exclusivities.

Phil Spencer’s firm recalls that the number of exclusives on PlayStation is five times higher than on Xboxand that Sony is also a very influential publisher, in addition to being one of the leading manufacturers:

Besides being the main console supplier, Sony is also a powerful game publisher. Sony is roughly equivalent in size to Activision and is nearly twice the size of Microsoft on the game publishing side. Sony publishes iconic first-party licenses, such as God of War, The Last of Us, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Uncharted, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone, as well as recently acquired Destiny 2, while owning minority shares in Epic Games, the publisher of Fortnite, and From Software, the Elden Ring studio. »

The quality of PlayStation games turned into an argument by Microsoft

With such a catalog, Microsoft believes that Sony will not be able to move overnight from its leading position to a position that would prevent it from being competitive. The American manufacturer thus declares that:

Sony has more exclusivity than Microsoft, and many of them are higher quality […] Not only Sony-exclusive games are more successful than Microsoft’s, but they also receive higher ratings from industry experts: the average Metacritic score for Sony’s top 20 exclusive games of 2021 was 87/100, compared to 80/100 for Xbox “.

If Microsoft is willing to admit this, it is above all to minimize its strike force and show that this takeover will allow it to better compete with Sony, without the latter being completely overwhelmed.

This argument has already been underlined by Sony, who believe that Microsoft is trying to make PlayStation “like Nintendo”, i.e. a rival that does not really play in the same court, because of exclusives which touch on genres other than than that of shooters like call of duty.
