Microsoft Teams blocks emergency calls with Android phones – import update

If you use Microsoft Teams on an Android phone, you should definitely install the latest updates or uninstall the Teams app. The Android app may block outgoing emergency calls. At least the Android versions from Android 10 can be affected, a workaround for emergencies is not known. How it can happen that an app without root rights can sabotage the most important function of the phone is not revealed by either Google or Microsoft.

The problem can at least occur if the Android app for Microsoft Teams is installed, but the user not is logged into MS Teams. The bug should be fixed with version 1416 / 1.0.0.2021194504 of the Teams application. This version is available in the Google Play Store, some users can already access 1416 / 1.0.0.2021195305. Google wants to fix the underlying security problem in Android with the first Android security update in the new year.

Microsoft Teams is a communication platform for collaborative work in companies and project groups. It offers chat, video chat, video conferencing and file sharing. Certain safeguards are reserved for Microsoft 365 for Large Business subscribers.

It has recently been possible to activate end-to-end encryption for individual calls in Microsoft Teams, provided that the responsible administrator has activated the appropriate policy. Only then does the option for activation appear in the Windows and MacOS clients. Microsoft has not announced when end-to-end encryption can be used with other operating systems such as Android, iOS and Linux

Here Microsoft explains how the policy and then the encryption can be activated. You can check whether end-to-end encryption is active during a call using the shield symbol in the top left. With end-to-end encryption, neither Microsoft nor the employer can eavesdrop on the Microsoft platform, and neither can they record the conversations there.
