If you’re having all the trouble in the world sending an email via Outlook or starting a videoconference on Microsoft Teams this morning, you’re not alone. In effect, a major outage has affected Microsoft’s servers since 11 a.m. this Wednesday, January 25, 2023.

In the aftermath, thousands of users in Europe and Asia began reporting the issue on social media and on Down Detector. “Hello @microsoftfrance since this morning, unable to connect to office 365, none of the apps work as well as @onedrive … @msonenote does not open either”, writes a concerned user on DownDetector. From what we know, it was notably impossible to connect to several Microsoft 365 services such as:

  • Microsoft Teams
  • Exchange Online
  • Outlook
  • SharePoint Online
  • OneDrive for Business
  • Microsoft Graph

An outage caused by a network change scheduled by Microsoft

Fortunately, Microsoft quickly confirmed that they were aware of the problem. According to her, these disruptions were caused by a scheduled network change by its teams. “We are going to roll back a network change, which we believe had an impact. We are monitoring the service while the cancellation takes effect“said the Redmond firm on Twitter.

At the time of writing these lines, however, the number of reports is starting to drop on DownDetector, a sign that things are gradually getting back to normal. Of course, it will probably take another few hours for the situation returns to normal.

As a reminder, this breakdown of Microsoft’s main services comes as the American company has formalized the dismissal of more than 11,000 people around the world. These departures concern many divisions of the giant, in particular engineering or gaming.

On this subject, we recently learned that several developers from 343 Industries and Bethesda Games Studios have been asked to take the door. What raise legitimate concerns for the future of the Halo saga and for the development of Starfield, the long-awaited space RPG from Bethesda.
