Microsoft wants a radically different design for its next console

The next Xbox may look like no other, according to a new report that claims Microsoft is considering radically changing the look of the next generation.

Microsoft reportedly plans to change the design team for the next Xbox console, which could giving the game console a completely new appearance. According to rumors, Microsoft will hand over the design of the next Xbox to a completely different division within the company. This decision would be motivated in particular by the delay in this generation compared to Sony.

The Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, launched in 2020, have sold 21 million copies in total, according to the latest information provided by Microsoft. However, this figure is far behind the PS5, which has sold over 40 million units, according to estimates. Microsoft isn’t happy with the Xbox’s sales performance, which is why the company seems to want to bet big on the next generation.

What do we know about the design of the next Xbox?

Industry insider Nick Baker revealed on The XboxEra Podcast that Microsoft could shake up the design team for the next Xbox. According to him, the Surface team could take on the project, instead of the team that designed the Xbox Series X and Series S. This could mean that the next Xbox will have a different shape, size and style than current models.

The reason for this change could be linked to rumors of a new portable Xbox device, which could compete with the Nintendo Switch. The Surface team has a lot of experience making portable devices, like the Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, and Surface Duo. They could use their expertise to create a new Xbox that’s even more portable than current models.

Microsoft is set to host a “commercial update event” this week, where it will share its vision for the future of Xbox. There is speculation that Microsoft will take the opportunity to announce plans to port some of its Xbox exclusive games to other consoles, including the Nintendo Switch and PS5. We will obviously keep you informed as soon as we know more.
