Microsoft warns: Windows update KB5014666 breaks printing function

Another Windows update causes problems. This time it disables the print function.

Microsoft’s update problems are getting worse and worse. Now Microsoft warns that patch KB5014666 for Windows 10 Version 20H2/21H1/21H2 and Windows Server 20H2 may also cause printing to stop working properly, among some other issues. Microsoft writes: ”

Microsoft has received reports of issues affecting some printing devices after installing this update. Symptoms observed can include duplicate copies of printers installed on a device (usually with a similar name and the suffix ‘Copy1’) and applications related to the printer with a specific name are unable to print. Normal printer usage may be disrupted, resulting in printing failure

.”

The problem affects printers that are connected to the Windows computer via the USB interface. Microsoft has published more information about this USB printer problem on this website.

Temporary workaround

As a temporary workaround, Microsoft recommends this approach: ”

Go to the ‘Settings’ app on your device. If a duplicate copy of a printer appears to exist in the ‘Bluetooth & devices’ section, verify that that printer is working. If so, that printer can be used normally, and other copies of the printer can be removed.

If the problem persists, update the printer driver for your device. See ‘Install the latest driver for your printer’ for instructions. If you’re still having problems, uninstalling and reinstalling your printer should fix the problem

.”

Microsoft is currently investigating a fix and will provide an update as more information becomes available.
