Microsoft will force links to open in Edge if you use Outlook and Teams on Windows

Microsoft is once again caught trying to force Internet users to use Edge. Links opened from Outlook on Windows will open in the home browser, regardless of your default application choice.

Many users of the Microsoft 365-integrated Outlook and Teams apps complain that links shared through these apps always open in Edge, the company’s browser. Far from being a mistake, this new policy shows that the Redmond firm is trying by all means to convince users to abandon Chrome in favor of Edge.

Some IT admins received an email detailing the new policy. It states that “in order to increase your productivity when working online, links from Microsoft accounts and Azure Active Directory in the Outlook for Windows will open in an Edge window next to the email from which they came”. Although the company assures that this change will not change default browser choice in Windows 11and that all this is done for the good of Internet users, it is clear that the company is once again trying to force the hand of users.

To make matters worse, the firm informs its professional users that this change will also be applied to Teams, the chat application which has recently had a facelift. Microsoft Edge, thanks to the addition of features taking advantage of Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT, has experienced a peak in use for a few weeks.

The Redmond browser, however, has returned to third place among the most popular browsers, behind Safari and the indestructible Chrome. This new attempt to force Internet users to use Edge rather than a competing program risks meeting the same rejection as the company’s many other attempts. The maneuver is in any case talking about it on the forums. By “pushing” Edge in this way, Microsoft is in direct contradiction with its commitment to respect users’ choice of applications to use by default.
