Could a small revolution be brewing in terms of super-sampling techniques used in video games?

A few days ago, we discussed the upcoming introduction of an option of “ great resolution » within Windows 11. Microsoft actually seems to want to go further.

Indeed, without questioning this option noted on test build 26052 of Windows 11, the publisher will take advantage of the GDC in San Francisco to present the so-called technology. DirectSRwith distinguished guests.

Whether it’s NVIDIA with DLSS, AMD with FSR or Intel with XeSS, the three players in the PC GPU market all have their own supersampling solution to refine video game rendering.

Of course, the three companies have taken significantly different paths and Microsoft intends to bring them together and, at the same time, greatly simplify the work of developers. Indeed, between partnerships with NVIDIA, Intel or AMD and technical difficulties in integrating several technologies, few games are compatible with DLSS, FSR and XeSS.

Knowing that gamers are still mostly on Windows, Microsoft therefore has a role to play. A role that would result in the integration of DirectSR with the DirectX API.

AMD, NVIDIA and Microsoft in the same boat?

As evidenced by the presentation of a conference organized during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Microsoft intends to unveil DirectSR at the Californian event.

On March 21, in the early evening (8:45 p.m. Paris time), Shawn Hargreaves, Austin Kinross, Wessam Bahnassi and Rob Martin will be on stage to talk about DirectSR. The first two work within Microsoft’s Direct3D and PIX technical teams while the next two hosts are employed by NVIDIA and AMD respectively.

We don’t know more at the moment, but this dual presence and the conference presentation text suggest that AMD and NVIDIA were involved in DirectSR. It’s hard to imagine them abandoning FSR and DLSS, but could DirectSR be a universal solution? Will it involve artificial intelligence like current techniques?
