If you are a gamer Xbox Series, you may have become accustomed to using the capture button to save images and videos. What you probably don’t know is that their days are numbered. Rest assured, there are several ways to prevent the loss of your gaming memories.

Over the past ten years, content sharing has taken an important place among players. The development of streaming and social networks has motivated players to share their gaming experiences, whether through lives or the publication of photos and videos.

Console manufacturers and publishers have therefore integrated sharing and capture tools, previously expensive and reserved for professionals. However, online storage of all these captured videos and images is a subject that Microsoft has recently taken up.

The lifespan of online captures will become limited

In September 2023, Microsoft announced its desire to reduce the load on Xbox servers. To do this, the firm simply intends to delete screenshots and videos recorded and posted online on the Xbox network more than 90 days ago. An announcement which was generally understood by the public, and which was supposed to come to fruition on January 9, 2024.

Without further communication on this subject, Microsoft has visibly postponed the implementation of the procedure. Now, it appears that this new capture management system will be implemented starting May 30, 2024. The information was reportedly shared through Xbox Support on Reddit and relayed by Gaming Deputy.

Save your best gaming moments. Game captures on the Xbox network will be deleted after 90 days […] “.

From this date, everything that has been recorded and uploaded will be automatically deleted from the Xbox network. These files will be irrevocably deleted from the servers, but fortunately, all is not lost for players wishing to keep all of this.

How to keep your captures beyond 90 days

The removal of captures and videos announced by Xbox only concerns what has been posted online on the Xbox network. In other words, there are ways around the problem. First, you can save your content locally, but this will take up space directly on your Xbox’s SSD. You can also store what you want to keep on external storage media.

To do this, plug in your media, go to My Captures, select what you want to keep, then copy everything. Last option: One Drive. Since you have an Xbox account, you have a Microsoft account. However, having a Microsoft account allows free access to 5 GB online storage space. The procedure remains the same, except that instead of sending the files to external media, you must select One Drive.
