Microsoft wants to improve the user experience on Bing in order to catch up with Google. According to The Informationthis could involve the integration of the chatbot ChatGPT from OpenAI.

The tool would allow Bing to present its search results in a more “friendly” way.

A long-time project?

According to several sources of The Information, Microsoft is reportedly planning to integrate ChatGPT functionality into its Bing search engine. Lagging behind Google at this level, Microsoft has, since 2019, invested $1 billion in the company founded as an association by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman and Wojciech Zaremba. Further investment is reportedly planned, and recent information suggests that the original agreement between Microsoft and OpenAI contained a clause to integrate certain ChatGPT features with Bing. Microsoft has therefore been closely observing what OpenAI is working on for at least 3 years.

If you missed the phenomenon, ChatGPT is a conversational AI that works thanks to deep learning and supervised learning. Users can ask it just about anything, and ChatGPT takes care of constructing a believable answer, in a style that could be that of a human. Despite the errors and inconsistencies, the result is generally stunning, which makes teachers and institutions monitoring the spread of malicious content fear the worst. Solutions are being developed, including the possibility of including a digital signature, but the fears are very real for the moment.

Rethinking the presentation of search results

No announcements have been made from Microsoft or OpenAI, and it’s still pretty hard to imagine how the technology behind ChatGPT could improve the experience for Bing users. OpenAI’s AI is not yet able to search the Internet and rank results by relevance, because it was not designed as a search engine. However, The Information indicated that ChatGPT’s technology could make it possible to present results in the form of complete sentences, associated with a source.

ChatGPT would thus be able to provide an explanation as to the results offered by Bing, and thus allow the birth of a more intuitive, more user-friendly interface. It could also help Bing suggest better keywords or keyphrases to users to make searches smoother and get better results. His integration could be done as early as March, according to the sources. If these are reliable, we should soon hear about them.

Powered by Microsoft, Bing is by far Google’s most comprehensive competitor. It is in particular the only one that really manages to titillate him in terms of the quality of the results.
