Midjourney: why the very popular image generation AI is cutting its free access?

The (very many) users of Midjourney pay the ransom for the success of this Content-generating AI very popular.

Midjourney CEO David Holz has indeed announced the cut of free access, and it is apparently the fault of overenthusiastic users.

The end of the free (Mid)journey

Since its arrival in 2022, Midjourney has, like DALL-E, made headlines, for both good and bad reasons. The AI that makes it possible to create images of an overall bluffing quality in a few moments from a text has indeed met with truly dazzling success.

Such popularity has even forced art communities, seeking to protect the hard work of flesh-and-blood artists, to banish these so-called assisted by AI from their ranks. Some didn’t even know which foot to dance to anymore, wrongly banishing “genuine” works thinking they were created by Midjourney and others.

This huge success was partly due to the free access to produce a number of images and to try this very promising tool. Faced with a far too large influx of users multiplying free accounts, having even apparently caused a temporary outage of the servers, it was finally decided, to the chagrin of the community, to cut ties with free access.

Prevention is better than cure ?

We can, however, be legitimately surprised by such a decision. The arrival of new users intrigued by Midjourney has grown exponentially over time. The unofficial reason could be behind the recent deployment of version 5.

If it is currently only accessible to subscribers, the major changes it has made to the AI to create images that are at the very least striking in photorealism have had a double viral and perverse effect. In addition to images of the pope in a down jacket, we were also treated to others representing, for example, Donald Trump being arrested by the police.

Such deepfakes, which many took to be genuine clichés, gave Midjourney, so to speak, bad publicity, which was discovered by netizens for the wrong reasons. History to limit the case, and before version 5 does not become more widely accessible to the public, the free access could therefore be cut, among others for this reason.

Until further notice, it is in any case no longer possible to have fun on Midjourney for free. A bad for a good ?
