Milestone at Tesla: Charging stations take a big hurdle


Tesla continues to expand its charging network. The number of stations for American e-cars continues to grow. Now a big hurdle has fallen in Europe. German Tesla drivers, but not only them, are doing particularly well.

Things are progressing for Tesla: The e-car pioneer from the USA is not only making progress in the sale of its popular Stromer, but is also weaving an increasingly dense network of charging stations worldwide. In Europe he has Expansion of the Supercharger network now passed another milestone.

Over 10,000 charging stations Tesla now offers at almost 900 locations spread over 30 European countries. Germany is at the forefront with over 140 locations, followed by France with more than 120 and the United Kingdom with around 100 Supercharger stations (source: Insideevs). This means that around a third of the world’s superchargers are located in Europe.

The electric car manufacturer celebrated the fact that this limit is now behind Tesla with a Twitter post that shows the progress in a graphic:

However, the figures also show that the 30 countries are covered very differently. A look at Tesla’s Supercharger map also proves that things are looking much better for Tesla drivers in the West, while there are many gaps in coverage in Eastern European countries or even in Scandinavia. Tesla will decide on strong sales markets when expanding. Where there are hardly any Teslas, there is hardly any need for charging stations.

For Tesla drivers, the further expansion of the charging network is actually good news, but it is unlikely to be as positively received as it was a year ago. Because Tesla has raised the prices for charging current since then. The e-car electricity costs between 69 and 71 cents per kWh currently in Germany.

But not only Tesla drivers can now use the superchargers. In some cases, Tesla also has its charging network for electric cars of other brands open. On the come, however, again significantly more expensive prices 85 cents/kWh for spontaneous charging stops. So the progressive expansion for Tesla may be a success. As long as e-car drivers can charge significantly cheaper elsewhere in the current expensive phase, the utilization of the superchargers should not increase to the same extent.
