The military programming law for the period 2024-2030 arrives this Monday at the National Assembly. 413 billion euros will be put on the table in order to transform the armies. a budget described as “historic” by the government, in a context still marked by the war in Ukraine.
Between 2017 and 2030, the army budget will therefore have doubled. This Monday, the military programming law for the period 2024-2030 arrives on the benches of the National Assembly and provides an envelope of 413 billion euros to transform the armies, or 118 billion more than for the previous law of this kind. A substantial budget that the executive justifies by the war in Ukraine, technological breakthroughs and new conflicts.
Evolve to High Intensity Combat
The effort is mainly focused on solar defence, cyber, space and intelligence. Among the major programs are the 109 new generation Caesar guns but also 2,300 Scorpion armored vehicles, 3,000 drones, a field hospital, new Rafales and the launch of the project to build a new nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with a first launch in 2036 before commissioning by 2040.
Clearly, the model of the French army must evolve towards high intensity combat and be able to engage on a front by leading a coalition. The text has already been validated by the Defense Committee. No votes against were cast, but abstentions were nonetheless recorded. Over the next two weeks, the executive will therefore try to convince the hemicycle as widely as possible.
