In Paris, the mill wheels of the Moulin Rouge, one of the landmarks of the French capital, collapsed during the night.
Videos and images on social media show the extent of the collapse.
According to the Paris fire department, no one was injured.
As videos on social media show, the mill wheels fell onto the street in front of the Variété on Thursday night.
It is still unclear how the famous Paris variety theater collapsed. The Paris fire department also said that there was no longer any risk of collapse.
A representative of the cabaret emphasized that the windmill mechanism on the roof of the Moulin Rouge was checked weekly by technicians and that no abnormalities were found in the most recent inspection. The management rules out a “malicious act”.
The damaged Moulin Rouge
The Moulin Rouge variety theater at the foot of Montmartre is a tourist magnet with around 600,000 spectators per year and is considered the birthplace of cancan dancing. It opened in 1889 – the same year that the Eiffel Tower was completed in the French capital.
The worst disaster in the pleasure temple’s more than hundred-year history was a fire caused by construction work in 1915. After that, the Moulin Rouge had to remain closed for renovation work for nine years.
