Mine bitcoin for free: mini solar system makes it possible


When the sun shines, I’m happy. During this time, my mini solar system produces free energy. But that also creates a problem, because the energy has to be consumed, otherwise it is sent to the network for free and I get nothing from it. That’s why I started mining Bitcoin. It’s free for me and I don’t pollute the environment.

Use the mini solar system to mine Bitcoin for free

Since I’ve owned my balcony power plant with a maximum output of 600 watts, I’ve completely changed my electricity consumption. Because the whole purchase is only worthwhile if I consume the energy produced. The PC is always running when I’m working, but when the sun is shining I produce more energy than my base load and my PC consume when working in the home office. So what to do? Switching on the washing machine or dishwasher every day makes little sense. That’s why I started mining Bitcoin again.

What am I about? I would like to use the energy that my solar system produces. As a result, I give away less energy and my plug-in solar system pays for itself more quickly. I don’t mine bitcoin by drawing energy from the regular electrical grid. That’s why the yield is also much lower, since I only start the action when the sun is shining properly.

What does my bitcoin setup look like?

I have a gaming laptop with an RTX 3070 graphics card that I don’t use at work and it’s basically just sitting around. When the sun is out, I turn on the gaming laptop, launch NiceHash, and use the sun’s energy to mine bitcoin. I reach thus about 52 to 53 MH/s. If the system were optimized, more than 60 MH/s would also be possible. I couldn’t do that with the mobile GPUs. The consumption is around 130 watts.

But I still have a desktop PC with RTX 3070 that I use for work. At the weekend I also use it to mine Bitcoin when the sun is really beating down. Through optimizations via MSI Afterburner I get 61 MH/s with one GPU consumption of about 110 watts. Overall, the PC consumes 170 watts. So both PCs draw about 300 watts. This is perfect for using up the power when I’m not doing anything else.

Since I can only mine Bitcoin when the sun is shining and I don’t do anything else with the electricity, I have so far earned about 6 euros in ten days. If only the laptop is running, then it’s about 50 cents in about 5 hours. If both PCs are running, sometimes 1 euro jumps out. There are 0.00016299 Bitcoin in my wallet right now.

That’s not the world, of course, but I have too only really direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m, which I can use to mine bitcoin. After that there is shading or not enough electricity is produced so that I would have to draw energy from the grid, which is not worth it in Germany given the high electricity prices.

As I said, it is only important to me that I do not give away the energy that I produce to the grid operator. Sometimes the sun just doesn’t shine and the system generates 100 watts, which is just enough for the base load. But when the sun is beating down, I also want to use the energy. I also don’t pollute the environment with it, which is a nice side effect. It won’t make me rich, but it’s also just a little fun to do.
