Everything is going well for Minecraft at the moment! Mojang’s game recently celebrated its 15th anniversary, filming on the live-action film wrapped last month, and Minecraft will be among the first titles available on the Xbox Store this summer. But the good news doesn’t stop there, and this time, it’s Netflix that’s involved…

Minecraft celebrates its 15th anniversary with a new announcement

While filming the film Minecraft only reached its end in April 2024 after delays caused not only by the writers’ strike in 2023 but also by concerns within the production team since 2014, Mojang probably decided not to stop the expansion of the universe Minecraft to a simple feature film. According to the official account of Netflix on Twitter (or X), the sandbox adventure game will also be the subject of a animated series developed by Mojang and the SVOD giant.

According to Netflixthis animated series will feature new characters and an new story, but that’s all we know about him currently. For the moment, no information has been communicated about the animation studio which will take care of the project, the narrative team which will write it, or the actors expected for the dubbing. But if we base ourselves on the animated adaptations of video games already produced by Netflix previously, as Castlevania, Cyberpunk: Edge Runnersor Arcanathe end result could be quite nice – especially if the script is sufficiently original, which is what we were looking for Mojang at all costs.

The vagaries of development spare no one

In 2012, Mojang was already receiving proposals from Hollywood producers to adapt Minecraft in films or series, but the developers had declared that they did not want to get into that “unless a good idea presented itself”. Two years later, negotiations began with Warner Bros. Pictures about a film adaptation with a substantial budget.

Development began soon after, but so did trouble. Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, Deadpool & Wolverine), who was to direct the film, withdrew from the team a few months later, as did his replacement, Rob McElhenney (Philadelphia, Mythic Quest), who left the project in 2018. Then it was Peter Sollett (Free Love, Metal Lords) who abandoned ship in 2020 when Warner Bros. Pictures pulled the film from its schedule due to the pandemic.

Finally, Minecraft found its definitive director in the person of Jared Hess (Thelma the Unicorn, The brains), for a launch planned in April 2025, six years after the release initially planned by Warner. We can only hope that the development of the animated series is less stormy!
