Mini-town Lichtensteig defies decline

Lichtensteig no longer has a lot: The once flourishing textile industry is dead, you can go shopping elsewhere. But the mini-town in Toggenburg has room – for people and for ideas.

The Golden Floor is the largest square in the picturesque old town of Lichtensteig.

Anyone strolling through Lichtensteig as a superficial observer gets the impression that the past is more than the future here. In the picturesque little town high above the Thur, the Gothic Old Town Hall, mighty old town houses and industrial villas bear witness to the earlier heyday. Lichtensteig, which received city rights in 1400, was the natural center of agricultural Toggenburg for centuries as a market town. Trade made the town prosperous.
