Cannabis law: Traffic light politicians put pressure on Lauterbach

In order to push ahead with the legalization of the controlled sale of cannabis, the budget committee has blocked money for public relations work in Lauterbach’s Ministry of Health. Should the Cannabis Control Act not come this year, one million euros could even be forfeited.

“Legalize it” in a different way: The budget politicians responsible for the Ministry of Health in the traffic light coalition are using an unusual procedure to put pressure on Minister Karl Lauterbach to actually get the planned legalization of cannabis underway this year. Paula Piechotta, member of the Greens in the Bundestag, told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that the budget committee decided that an amount of one million euros would be blocked for the public relations work of the SPD-led ministry until the cannabis control law agreed in the coalition agreement was presented.

“As a traffic light, we must now also tackle the health projects in the coalition agreement in addition to combating corona and implement them quickly,” she said. If the law does not pass in the second half of the year, the funds will be forfeited. According to her, the application for the ban was pushed forward together with MPs Svenja Stadler from the SPD and Karsten Klein from the FDP.

Bill announced in the second half of the year

In the coalition agreement, the “controlled sale of cannabis to adults for recreational purposes in licensed shops” was agreed. Minister of Health Lauterbach announced a few days ago that he would tackle the law this year. First of all, the Federal Drug Commissioner Burkhard Blienert should hold technical discussions with national and international experts. According to the SPD politician, a draft law should follow in the second half of the year. Until then, Lauterbach had given the impression that he wanted to focus on other reform projects first.
