Mio aims to make videoconferencing software
interoperable, making communication clear between Slack
, Teams
, Zoom
, Webex
and other competitors.

We’ve taken the bend of seeing proprietary systems evolve in the tech world – the same goes for communication platforms that might want to keep their circles closed. However, several factors, including recent periods of repeated confinement, have changed the mindset of these applications, which are now opting for more interoperability. This is where Mio comes in…

What do we know about the startup Mio?

Chatting on various messaging services is often a breeze for people in the same company. But when it comes to interacting with other organizations through virtual meetings, through different chat applications, the task is sometimes much more complicated.

Mio was founded in 2016 in Austin by Tom Hadfield and James Cundle, with the very purpose of helping businesses collaborate on messaging platforms such as Zoom, Cisco Webex, Microsoft Teams and Slack.

The young American startup successfully raised funds reaching $ 8.7 million in Series A. These funds would be provided for the improvement of their services, the support of other platforms such as Google Chat, Symphony or the Meta Workplace, but also for the deployment of new functionalities allowing users to synchronize their statuses on different applications in order to unify their means of communication.

Towards a new era of interoperability

Mio builds an extensive working network that allows different users of chat applications to collaborate. A Slack user can therefore easily interact with a user from another competing messaging platform. Given the increasing use of these platforms since the pandemic, this interoperability is all the more welcome.

Other firms have already tried to take up the challenge before Mio, such as Nextplane or Matrix. Solutions that provide their users with decentralized messaging with bridges to Discord, Slack, and other chat apps – not including Zoom, Webex, or Teams, however.

By focusing on the interoperability of messaging, especially in the professional context, Tom Hadfield specifies that Mio aims to achieve what he describes as ” Nirvana of collaboration ”, a utopia where everyone could interact and collaborate, regardless of the chat application used.
