Are you one of those Verpeilos that the well-organized friends like to make fun of? Then we have the perfect counterattack for you: Your brain does not work any worse than that of the others. On the contrary: forgetful people are often exceptionally smart and make the best decisions.

Tadaaaa, here it is: the study we’ve all been waiting for. We who do not congratulate us until days after a birthday (or never). We, who storm up the stairs, only to ask ourselves on level 13 what we wanted to do again at the top. We who spend a great deal of our lives looking for our keys, wallets, gloves and super important documents. Yes, exactly like Bolle we are happy about a wonderful study, because now it is finally official: We are no more stupid than our well-organized fellow human beings who so often stare at us in disbelief. No, it gets even better: we are smarter. And only BECAUSE we are forgetful. HÄÄÄÄ?

The brain has to forget in order to function

How is that supposed to work? Quite simply: memories are not there at all to linger in our brain for a particularly long time. At least not all of them. A really well-functioning brain only stores the really important things in the long term. Those that are needed to make the best decisions in the future. All of the details (and yes, that includes the fifty-two birth dates that some people have on their minds) should be thrown out on a regular basis. So if you are one of those people who quickly overwrite information, this could mean that your brain is working very effectively and that you are able to make particularly smart decisions. This is what Blake A. Richards and Paul W. Frankland from the University of Toronto found out. Blake and Paul, you are heroes !!!

In general, everyone is wrong

By the way, one shouldn’t rely on the image of some character traits either way. People generally draw very strange conclusions that are not true at all. For example, even as children we think beautiful people are smarter than less beautiful. Completely unfounded claim! And people who make a mess are seen as particularly absent-minded and underestimated. But it is completely different: Kleckern speaks for a very active brain. So it is no coincidence that especially spoiled people like to wear stains on their blouses from time to time. If both apply to you, we see that as a double argument. We are smart. We are great. Anyone who still wants to mock us should do it calmly. Fortunately, we immediately forget such unimportant details! And if that’s not super smart of us, we don’t know anymore either.
