- The first rocket was launched into space from England late Monday evening.
- Nine satellites were to be put into orbit, but the plan failed.
Shortly after midnight, the launch vehicle separated from the converted jumbo jet. This served as a launch pad for the rocket with nine satellites, almost eleven kilometers above the Atlantic Ocean. So far, the plan worked according to measure, but then an irregularity prevented the rocket from reaching orbit, as the US company involved, Virgin Orbit, announced.
The rocket did not reach the required height and as a result the satellites could not send out. However, the plane returned to Earth safely and as planned. The company is not yet able to provide any precise information about the failure. There will be an investigation in the next few days.
The UK’s first rocket launch
The converted machine called “Cosmic Girl” took off from Newquay Airport in southwest England late Monday evening. It was Britain’s first rocket launch.
The United Kingdom wants to bet on the space industry and hopes to contribute the equivalent of a good 4.2 billion Swiss francs to the British economy in the coming decade. Newquay is one of a total of seven planned spaceports in the United Kingdom. The first vertical launch of a rocket from Scotland is planned later this year.
