Scheduled for release at the end of August, the horror film “The Deliverance” by Lee Daniels with Andra Day, Glenn Close, Mo’Nique and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor has unveiled its first trailer. And it makes us want to see the rest.
Lee Daniels is back and apparently in great shape! The director of Precious, Paperboy and The Butler has reserved his next film for Netflix. And for the occasion, he is reuniting with Andra Day, the star of his film Billie Holiday, a state affair which also earned her an Oscar nomination for best actress.
The director tries his hand at a new genre with The Deliverance, written by David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum. The film centers on a single mother (Andra Day) who experiences strange events in her new home. The film is billed as a “film that defies the codes of the genre on darkness, possession and the quest for a higher force.“
Based on a true story
Here is the official synopsis of the film: “Single mother Ebony Jackson, struggling with her demons, moves her family into a new home for a fresh start. But strange things start happening that arouse the suspicions of Child Protective Services, threatening to tear the family apart. Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children.“
It is inspired by the Ammons family possession case, also known as the “Demon House”. It is a case of alleged demonic possession that occurred in Gary, Indiana, United States, in 2011. Latoya Ammons, her mother, Rosa Campbell, and her three children claimed that paranormal activity had occurred in the residence. The story was made public in January 2014 and received national attention.
The Deliverance is Daniels’ first feature film since 2021’s Billie Holiday, which followed 2013’s The Butler. Daniels also earned Academy Awards nominations for Best Picture and Best Director for Precious, and was a co-creator, executive producer, director and writer on the Fox series Empire.

A casting that impresses
In addition to Andra Day, Glenn Close, Mo’Nique – Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actress for Precious – Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Demi Singleton and Tasha Smith share the spotlight with Stranger Things’ Omar Epps and Caleb McLaughlin.
In the trailer, it seems that it is Ebony’s son or daughter who seems to be prey to a demon. We don’t see the child. We just hear it. And it is not the voice of a child that comes out of this body, but rather a bestial rattle that freezes the blood. And these first images do not explicitly explain what role Glenn Close plays in the film.
The actress from Fatal Attraction appears transformed, ultra-made up and adopting the garish codes of the American South. But we guess that she is a friend of the family. Could she be an antagonist? We will have to wait until August 30 to find out.
