Mission at PSG still unfulfilled
Neymar extended for (slightly) less money
The Brazilian superstar Neymar has now extended after lengthy speculation at Paris St. Germain. The Champions League semi-finalist is also setting an example for the international competition. Especially since the club’s big dream has not yet been fulfilled.
On Instagram, Neymar proudly showed the PSG jersey with the ominous year 2025 on the back. After months of speculation about a return to clammy FC Barcelona, the Brazilian superstar has extended his contract with Paris St. Germain until 2025. “It is a great pleasure for me to continue my adventure at PSG. I am very happy in Paris,” he was quoted in a club statement: “I am proud to be part of this group, with these players and this one great coach to work and be part of the history of this club. “
The eccentric South American on the Seine is said to have suffered a slight drop in wages, but his annual salary is still estimated at 30 million euros. Obviously, Barça Neymar couldn’t or wanted to offer that much. At 29, Neymar is in the prime of football’s age. The lightning-fast attacker was largely responsible for the fact that PSG advanced to the semi-finals in the Champions League and eliminated defending champions Bayern Munich, among others. In the semifinals, however, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City was a size too big.
Guardiola recently praised the Brazilian and looked back on his time in Spain: “If he had stayed with Barcelona, they would have won the Champions League two or three times. He, Messi and Suarez were the best offensive,” said Guardiola . As is well known, Neymar and his PSG teammates failed in the final at Bayern last year. Even if he won the premier class with Barca in 2015, the mission of the transfer world record holder in the French capital, who won € 222 million in 2017, has not yet been fulfilled.
Three titles in Ligue 1, which has been dominated by PSG for years, and two cup wins are not enough. To crown his time in Paris, Neymar is missing the premier class. In order for this to succeed, the club also wants to retain its second top striker in the long term. Kylian Mbappé’s contract, like Neymar’s old contract, runs until 2022. The 22-year-old world champion is of course on the slips of several top clubs.
By tying Neymar for the long term, the Parisians were able to signal where the journey should go in the next few years. A similar coup with Mbappé would underline the ambitions of the sheikh club. The money is likely to play a rather subordinate role.
