Also in “Mission: Impossible 7” the main actor and action star Tom Cruise again performed some daring stunts.

Norway. The first day of shooting for “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” in autumn 2020. Superstar Tom Cruise (61), who turned 61 on July 3, is standing with his motorcycle at the foot of a ramp that was specially built for the production of the action blockbuster on a 600 meter high cliff. Cruise hits the gas, blasts his motocross machine up the ramp, leaps over the cliff, releases the bike in the air and plummets for a few seconds before his parachute opens and the star climbs the steep mountain faces in a so-called BASE jump performed.

This death-defying, all-handmade stunt is the action highlight of the latest installment in the long-running spy movie series. “It’s by far the most dangerous thing we’ve ever tried,” explains filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie (54) in a video available on YouTube. The clip clearly shows how concerned the screenwriter and director of “Mission: Impossible 7” is during his main actor’s daring flight.

“The Crown” star Vanessa Kirby (35), who is again in the action blockbuster and plays the mysterious character White Widow, agrees with her director. “Oh my god you’re so scared about him and it’s funny because you care for yourself but Tom Cruise isn’t scared at all,” she told spot on news in an interview. That, according to Kirby, puts Tom Cruise in a nutshell: “He’s just completely fearless.”

Race through Rome in handcuffs

In the 27-year history of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, the main actor and Star Cruise have already hung on the side of a plane taking off, climbed the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building in Dubai at 830 meters, or performed a so-called HALO -Parachute jump for which military commando units are specially trained.

The model athlete, known for his special ambition, seems to want to outdo himself with every new part of the “Mission: Impossible” film series. He completed 500 parachute jumps and 13,000 motorcycle jumps on a training ramp alone as training and in preparation for the jump mentioned above, which he dared to do six times on the day of shooting before everything was in the box as desired and could be captured by the cameras flying with him.

“We worked on this stunt for years. I’ve wanted to do this since I was a little kid. I had to get so good at it that there was no way I could miss,” Cruise reports on YouTube about his daring motorcycle jump from the Norwegian mountain cliff. One of the last true movie stars on the planet seems to have only one competitor left to outdo: himself.

“Movies aren’t made like that anymore”

The motorcycle base jump is by no means the only scene from the agent sequel where Cruise took a big risk. For example, the star single-handedly steered his car during a breakneck chase on the cobbled streets of Rome, as he is handcuffed to his co-star Hayley Atwell (41) in the film’s storyline, who died in ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ new character Grace plays. “Tom really had to drive with one hand in handcuffs, there was no cheating,” reports stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood (52). in a video about the car chase in Rome, also available on YouTubewhich, like all of the blockbuster’s big action sets, relied solely on hand-made, practical effects.

“Movies aren’t made like that anymore,” says actor Shea Whigham (54) in an interview with the news agency spot on news. In current blockbuster productions from the Hollywood dream factory, “everything is now green screen or blue screen”, while in “Mission: Impossible 7” Whigham actually fought the super agent Ethan Hunt, played by Cruise, on the roof of a moving train in Norway. “It has a physical quality. I like to say you as a spectator are with us when my face and Cruise’s face are made to flap by the wind.”

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” starts in German cinemas on July 13th. The sequel “Dead Reckoning Part Two” is scheduled to be released a year later, in June 2024. In a recent interview, Cruise hinted that there may be more sequels to the popular Agent series.
