An autopsy previously submitted by the Attorney General of Mexico’s Coahuila state found the toddler was sexually assaulted and his death in July 2020 was the result of hypovolemic shock that caused her renal artery to bleed to death. The court found that after an argument with the mother, Miter struck the infant in the lower back, causing the infant to vomit and faint, causing the child to suffer fatal loss of blood and fluids.

According to the mother, the beatings and sexual assault on the toddler were triggered by Miter’s failure to support another pregnancy of hers. She told the court during the trial that the former major league player “wanted to force me to have an abortion when I was four months pregnant.” It is not known if she carried the child she was pregnant with to term.

Miter denies murder allegations

Miter was arrested the day after a hospital confirmed the girl’s death and attempted to cover up the crime by telling investigators the toddler had fallen down a flight of stairs. A week after his arrest, he was charged with femicide and molesting a minor. The child’s mother was arrested on August 26, 2020 and charged with femicide but acquitted on October 8, 2021.

During the trial, Miter tried to acquit herself of the murder charges and to convince the court that the mother, who had experienced domestic violence in a previous relationship, was responsible for her daughter’s death.

Miter was arrested in Mexico in 2019 for domestic violence against a former partner. However, he was not sentenced to prison for this offense and instead had to pay a fine of 20,000 pesos (about 860 euros).
