MK2 launches its “algorithm-free guaranteed” streaming platform

Good news for moviegoers. MK2 launches into the world of streaming by offering a paid subscription, but which presents a unique model: it is without algorithm. We explain to you…

From March 9

Already known by fans of the seventh art, the MK2 Curiosity service already offered to watch films for free in AVoD. However, the production company has decided to innovate by offering a new offer “unique in the world” through a paid platform, but without an algorithm. This is the specificity of this new formula which will be launched on Thursday 9 March.

For film professionals, this offer goes against the flow of streaming platforms such as Netflix and Prime Video, which rely above all on an algorithm to highlight the content broadcast on their platform. MK2 describes its platform rather as a “real online movie club”.

Behind this offbeat paid offer, the objective will be to highlight productions in order to rediscover the world of cinema through various content suitable for young and old alike: “The catalog will be available via a section Collections which will highlight the films through editorial selections, by author, by theme (often curious), by actors or by desire”said MK2.

How much does it cost ?

In addition to its free content, MK2 Curiosity will offer a €2.99/month subscription plan until June 1 for its launch, then €5.99/month without commitment. The platform will be compatible with Chromecast and AirPlay, and also available on iOS, Android, Apple TV and Android TV stores.

On the program, documentaries, short films and of course hundreds of films, old and new, thanks to agreements with independent distributors “such as Carlotta, Art House, UniversCiné and many others, which will enrich the selections week after week, making it possible to create or support events and cinephile news”we could read in the press release.

“After three years and more than a million unique visitors, I am delighted with this new stage in the development of this unique platform that is MK2 Curiosity, which gives a new setting and another voice to cinema in this era which tends to consider art as a perishable consumer product. In our societies obsessed with individualism and flooded with images, it seems essential to me to select and offer precise and refined looks. In a world where so many stories are told, we need poetry. In an era of control, it seems important to us to lose it”said Lubna Playoust, creator and artistic director of MK2 Curiosity.

After Netflix and now MK2, Free has also unveiled a new streaming offer for its subscribers, called Oqee Ciné.
