Mobile plan, electricity, gas… Bills can be paid at the tobacconist

Starting this summer, terminals for paying gas, electricity and telephone bills will be installed in 5,000 tobacconists. This system aims to extend the system already in place for the payment of fines, taxes and local public services, already present in 6,500 municipalities.

After childcare bills, canteen bills, fines and taxes, it will soon be possible to pay all of one’s bills via terminals installed in tobacconists, reports The Parisian. The Ministry of the Economy has indeed recently acted to expand this successful system, already present in 6500 municipalities, sectors such as gas, water, electricity or telephony.

According to our colleagues, 20% of French people still pay their bills manually each month, without resorting to remote payment via the Internet. Moreover, most of them are elderly people or individuals without access to digital technology. It is important not to promote the exclusion of these people. And to simplify people’s lives to avoid administrative paperwork, explained Bercy to the Parisian.

A free service

Before the end of 2022, the first 5,000 terminals will be installed by the Franaise des Jeux (FDJ). By 2024, nearly two out of three tobacco bars will have them. If a commission system paid by the operators has been set up, the service will be 100% free for the user. The latter will therefore only have to scan a QR Code written on his invoice and pay it by credit card or cash.

However, various restrictions have been introduced to prevent fraud and money laundering. One ceiling of 1200 euros for example bills set has t set up. The payment of telephone bills over 50 euros will require an identity check by the tobacconist. The extension of this system was welcomed by Philippe Coy, president of the Confederation of tobacconists, who sees it as an effective way of attracting potential customers.
