- A decision on a mode change with the controversial playoffs has not yet been made.
From the 2023/24 season, the top league of Swiss professional football will consist of 12 clubs instead of the current 10. The clubs decided on Friday at the general assembly of the Swiss Football League in Ittingen. A two-thirds majority of votes was required for voting.
Decision on playoff mode follows
Also on Friday, there will be a vote on the introduction of playoffs at the end of the season. All that is needed is a simple increase in votes. The plan is for the 12 teams to play each other twice first. This makes 22 rounds.
After that, the league would be divided into 2 groups: the so-called Championship Group of the top 6 and the so-called Qualification Group of teams in ranks 7 to 12. Some of them play back and forth with each other for the title and places in the European Cup , the others play against relegation to the Challenge League. In this way, all teams – before the possible playoffs – come to a total of 32 games.
The 2022/23 season will still be played according to the old format introduced in 2003 with ten teams and a double round (36 games).
