Moderna: Covid vaccine targeting Omicron authorized in Japan

(CercleFinance.com) – Moderna announced today that Japanese health authorities have approved its New Drug Application carrying a slightly modified version of its Covid vaccine specifically targeting the so-called ‘Omicron’ variant.

Named mRNA-1273.222, this serum targeting Omicron now joins the vaccine targeting the BA.1 variant, mRNA-1273.214, which was approved in Japan in September.

‘COVID-19 continues to be a public health threat in Japan, with ongoing infection rates driven by Omicron subvariants. mRNA-1273.222 is designed to provide a broader and longer lasting immune response against Omicron BA.4-5, which are the major subvariants circulating in Japan’, said Rami Suzuki, President and Representative Director of Moderna Japan .

“We are grateful for this approval decision and are committed to bringing this vaccine to the Japanese people as soon as possible,” he added.
